Another common symbol seen in Royal and Noble Arms, The Belt was not seen to convey what we in The Modern World, would see a “Belt” as being used for. Not used to hold up clothing, Belts (or Baldrics), were used to carry swords only. In use of Heraldry, the Belt was an important part of the conferment of the award of an Order. The “Belt” was often Surmounted over the Insignia of The Order the Holder was awarded (eg: Knight of The Garter). Often (and traditionally as it has become) – the Order's “Motto” (or saying) – is placed around the Belt. They bare always portrayed in a natural tincture.
