From the 12th Century, The Bat (or Flittermouse), was a popular creature in many Countries Heraldry. They did not necessarily have “evil” connotations. They were looked at as Birds (it was not until later that they were associated with The Rodent Family – and their reputation went!). Colored Black or Brown, The Bat is always shown with it's wings extended. Although not “feared”, they did convey “Dread” and “Mourning” in some Countries.
