The Austrian National Colors are based on a possible 1191 A.D. Version – which was based on a “popular” legend. It was during The Battle of Acre in 1191 that Duke Leopold V went into battle wearing an all white tunic. He fought so hard in personal hand-to-hand combat that he was covered in the blood of his enemies. Removing his sword belt from his waist, it was found that the white of his tunic was untouched. This combination of 3 “Stripes” (Red, White and Red), were adopted by Austria as it's primary National identifier since the 13th Century.
