As is used in a fireplace, the use of Andirons in Heraldry is not uncommon. Often, the heads of Canines were used. As such, they are often called “Fire Dogs”. Used in some cases as Supporters, some images also use Human heads as well (although this meaning is lost). Examples of this type of symbolism were popular in the 16th Century.
