When Mexico broke away from Spain (and declared it's independence) in 1822, US President James Monroe was among the first to recognize them. This also caused an influx of American Settlers who emigrated into Mexico (who was more than happy to have them – at first!). In 1826, one such Settler (Hayden Edwards) had moved into East Texas and “declared” his independence from Mexico!. He created this set of Colors for his “new” Republic – of Fredonia. The Flag was a bisected White and Red Field. In the White Stripe was placed the phrase “INDEPENDENCE, FREEDOM AND LIBERTY”. The US did NOT recognize “Fredonia”” and it was not soon after Edwards “declaration” - he had to flee Mexico!
