Raised in 1775, The Newport Light Infantry were from New Hampshire. They were formed to protect the New Hampshire Coastline from British Naval and Marine attacks. They were later detailed to the Border with Canada for protection against British “counter-attacks”. They were nicknamed “The Silk Stockings”. This nickname grew from the fact that all recruits were from well-off Families (and silk-stockings were a sign of wealth). Their Colors were a Blue Field with the upper Canton featuring a “modified” British Union Naval Jack. The center of their colors also featured a full color representation of New Hampshire's “Crest of Arms”.
