This practice is used in Heraldry to “marshal” or join 2 Shields (or Crests) – related within a Family. In cases where a Knight had a “Titled” Wife, his Coat of Arms if placed to the right of hers (the Point of Honor). In cases where the Holder has Office (and is Titled) – his Coat of Arms for that Office goes to the right of his Nobleman's Coat of Arms. Accolle is also used to denote a higher Peerage (or rank) – with the higher going to the right.
