In The Philippine Islands of The Pacific, there are many ‘’magical beliefs’’ which pre-date The Culture’s Christianity by many thousands of years. The People have a rich and colorful mythology of Demons, Ghosts and The Supernatural. ‘’Gaway’’ is one such ‘’magical’’ Concept, still followed (by some). In short, Gaway is a type of ‘’sympathetic magic’’. In other words, the overall ‘’belief’’ in ‘’magic’’ is actually what ‘’makes it work’’. While most would see this concept as ‘’superstition’’, MANY Cultures subscribe to sympathetic magical belief. These would include: Potions, Spells, Curses and their uses to influence others. The gathering of organic ‘’debris’’ – such as hair, nail clippings and dried skin are also examples. The use of various insects common to the Islands are also viewed by some as a type of Gaway. Beetles are seen as possible curses (made tangible) as are mosquitoes and other ‘’flying vectors’’. Often, These creatures bite Humans in the Jungle and cause various reactions and even serious health issues. Gaway beliefs assign such ‘’attacks’’ as a form of ‘’Evil Magic’’.
