An Aztec Deity, ''Cihuateteo'' was a Spirit composed of those Women and Children who had died in childbirth. In Ancient Aztec Society, Childbirth was likened to what a Warrior experienced in battle. As such Women who were pregnant were revered. Cihuateteo was invoked when a Woman went into childbirth. If worthy, a woman and child would survive, if not their Spirits would join with Cihuateteo. It was common for a household to place Her icon (statue), inside when a woman announced She was ''with child''.
