Week #8 - Stronghold 2

Recommended Posts

Congratulations Tokamaps for this victory! Like you can conclude from my first feedback for your map, I also agree that your map is better then mine - I like the design of the map in general and I like how you made the landscape so beautiful. It is a deserved victory.

For myself, I am happy that I made this map of mine. I enjoyed making it, and I am glad that I remade the map I long lost, and that in a way that I no longer feel sorry for losing it. For that I am thankful to Chris and others who made this contest happen which motivated me to start working on it. Also, another good part of it all is that this contest was right after I passed my exam, so I was able to participate. :)

EDIT: Do I submit the map to downloads central? :) I mean, it won't be done automatically, or something like that? I wouldn't expect that, but I ask just in case.

Looks I am a bit late to the awards ceremony :P

Finally I had the time to download and try those maps.

Tokamaps, congratulations! Your map is excellend and you really deserve to win this challange.

EaglePrince, your map is really nice and good-looking, too. I can see how this was a very close call.

Maybe we can meet up and play those maps in multiplayer some day.

As for my own map, I am really pleased that I still got 2 out of 3 points, considering that I did not spend a lot of time on it.

That is quite a nice result for me. And I learned something new in the process. Wonder if anyone noticed the hidden paths through the forests :)

Thanks, Nigel, I'm glad you like my map. :) And yes, I hope we would play some of them online too! Speaking about my map, it may be less interesting one for multiplayer because of the balance, but if you wouldn't mind, I would be happy if we played my map as well. I mean, it's just the fact that those lord in north-west have more resources and lords in the east. That's because I had in mind a singleplayer map in which you would choose between positions in south-east, which would be easier, and in north-east, which would be harder.

And of course, don't take wrong when I say this - one could understand that I want to say "please, let's play another map in multiplayer", but it's definitely not the case, and I would be happy if we played it. Only I understand that you may have more fun in multiplayer with Tokamaps map. :)

Oh, and I have another idea for a multiplayer map. In fact, now I have two ideas, but maybe those two ideas could be implemented into one map. :)

EDIT: And regarding your map, I like the design, only you didn't have enough time to make some more details. If you want I would encourage you do some more work on the map, so it would be even better. :) I myself did the same with mine now, which you could have noticed in Stronghold 2 section. I made a small correction - one village was set to produce food only, while it had iron. Now it will produce iron. And another thing - I managed to add a gate to outlaws castle near the coast, and outlaws are able to leave or enter the castle through that gate. Players are unable to enter the castle unless they destroy the wall or something like that. :)

I've submitted another version. The one I submitted few ours ago had some issues, so I reversed to an older one. Now it is almost the same as original, only one village in north will produce iron instead of tree food types.

Chris, I have submitted that bad version to Downloads Central? Could you approve this "fixed version" instead, or should I submit the map again?

You know what @EaglePrince - that was exactly what I thought of the map as soon as I saw it- I thought it would be perfect for multiplayer.

Regarding the map, I'll approve the current one and if there are updates needed to it, just update it.

It had to be approved again - but obviously didn't tell you that. What happened when you submitted it? I take it that it did work this time?

P.S. I've approved it again.

** Edit **

As an explanation - when you update the archive of your file, it needs to be reapproved.

I was only trying to edit the entry, I wasn't submitting another one. I'll see first if this one which is approved at this moment is the fixed version.

EDIT: Yes, it is the right version now. Thanks. :)

You can subscribe to this entire section 52 Weeks of Stronghold, and you would get a notification each time there is a contest, and by the time there will be a Stronghold 2 related one as well. Only I believe this same one won't take place again this year, but maybe we could expect a similar one. In January was a contest with making a was scenario I think.

I have just made a brief history of our war in the tread. :D

Nigel didn't make it, he dealt to do another thing this evening. Tokamaps, one his friend, and I played a game. We played 1v2, as we agreed that it is most likely that teams like that to be even.

We played his map The Chokepoint Island, I was in south-west, Tokamaps was in north-east, and his friend was in north-west. We played with 2 years no rush.

The first fights began when he got close to me. He took the island estate with stone, while at the same moment I took the estate north of my castle. I decided to attack capture the island when I saw he had only some archers and light cavalry there, while I had only archers, in overall I had more troops. I managed to defeat his troops there, and the island was mine. I set the defenses, and later I was he also holds the next estate - in the middle of the map. He had prepared stone structures there to send crossbowmen there. As soon as my pikemen and one or several swordsmen arrived on the island I went to take that estate too. I built stone buildings there to defend the village, and later I saw that he had the last remaining village as well, so I took that one too - it was far from him and harder to defend.

Next we were mostly fighting in front of his castle estate. There were some interesting skirmishes, and Tokamaps had some interesting ideas how to deal with my catapults, and how to mess up with us - in general. For example, he was using spies to sneak into our territories to destroy buildings or to destroy our trebuchets. Later when I learned what he does I had knights which were ready to act.

After some time me and my ally were struggling to break down his defenses, we needed a lot of patience for that, and after some time we finally managed to destroy his towers and to break his walls, and to enter in with our knights, and to take down his lord.

He was a great enemy in this war, and I must say that what effected the cause of the war the most was me having large castle estate in which I was able to build one iron mine, and that first battle in which I defeated his troops on the island. If that went differently the war would be harder to win, or maybe it would have been his victory.

Also, now when I know the map better, I like it even more - it's not just that interesting landscape but it is interesting resource placement as well - one stone village, one village with marches, and several villages have iron, while none of the village can have more than one iron mine. The map is awesome. smile

It was a great fight. I believe you weren't expecting my archers to attack you on that island, but I was also lucky to have iron so I was able to produce metal armors, and later swords as well. That is true, your position was pretty hard. On one hard it was easy to defend, as there is only one passage into your estate, but on the other hand, unlike me and my ally you didn't have any village close to you. The closes one was the one in the middle where you could have found only fields and forests (no iron nor stone), and it was hard to defend as well. Still, it would be something easier to deal with me if you didn't those troops on the island.

Oh, and by the way, am I the only one who make different type villages - like iron producing, stone producing, etc? I believe you didn't set any of those on your map? It's not that important, it is also interesting to leave everything for the player to build what he needs, but I also find it interesting when I player can take a village, and find some iron or stone already produced there waiting to be transported to my castle? :) Neither of those two is better of course, it is only a matter of taste, but there are lots of maps with all villages being default type. :)

Oh, I thought you built the two of those quarries that were there when I took the village. :)

I agree, only it is still better for me to have iron, as the only thing I could do with pitch would be selling it. Of course, placing pitch on the ground would also be interesting, but that is too little effective against knights. :(
