Swordsmen are your elite soldiers.  Their heavy armour makes them very slow, but when they reach their target they prove devastating.  They have both great offensive and defensive capabilities. Swordsmen are quite expensive, though, so one you make sure to have a solid economy to support a steady stream of new units. Also, despite their heavy armour, swordsmen can still suffer casualties from ranged units. Especially, crossbowmen can decimate even larger groups of swordsmen relatively quickly. Their slow speed makes them also very vulnerable to fire. Still, a large force of swordsmen is among the most dangerous things to face in battle.
