The Lord is the single most important unit in the entire game. He is in command of the entire Castle and is equipped with a sword to defend himself should he be confronted with enemy units. Should the lord die during a mission, then the defeat event will be triggered.
Unlike previous titles, the lord doesn't involve himself much with civilian life. He will stand wherever the player places him and content himself with looking at his sword or praying.
Although the game's description of the stables states that the lord can ride a horse, similar to knights, he's in fact not capable of doing this in either campaign or free build. Even though the lord is still a powerful combat unit albeit rather slow that can take on any other unit in combat. Though one should be careful as groups of units can easily overpower the lord.
There are multiple versions of the lord in the game. The default lord is used in all campaigns and is meant to depict the Boy. In multiplayer, it's possible to select the Rat, Pig, Pig (Bishop), Jackal, Wolf or Lady Catherine as your lord. Furthermore, the map editor offers the option to also use Lord Longarm, Thomas Blackstaff, the Sultan and the Iron Duke as a lord replacement for AI players. It is important to remember, though, that the scenario condition 'Lord Dies' only work with the default lord.
