Dating to 2,050 BC in Egypt's Middle Kingdom Period ''Birth Tusks'' were a form of ''protection device'', crafted to ward of Evil Spirits. The practice was of Royal origins, with Commoners emulating it as well. Royalty used ivory particularly from the tusk of The Hippopotamus (a sacred animal linked to fertility and child bearing). They commonly had etched (carved) figures of ideology designed for protection of both Mother and Child. These would be placed inside homes in rooms designed as Nurseries.
