Stronghold 3 comes with multiple game modes for the player to tackle.
The military campaign is the core of the game's content. It's a 17-mission-long campaign telling the story of the wolf's return and the subsequent war against him and his allies. The campaign introduces the player to most aspects of the game as well as units, buildings, and mission types.
The economic campaign is eight missions long and focuses on events after the military campaign. Unlike the military campaign's missions, these missions focus on economic matters rather than combat.
The Blackstaff campaign is a five mission DLC released in May 2012 for owners of Stronghold 3 and as part of the Gold Edition. It is a short military campaign focused on events taking place between mission 10 and 16 of the military campaign.
Like previous Stronghold titles, the game comes with historical sieges. There are 12 historic castles and the player can choose whether to besiege or to defend them.
Free build is back and gives the player the opportunity to simply hang back and enjoy building their dream castle. If the player wishes to make things more exciting, it's possible to trigger enemy invasions from the freebuild manager.
Players can also enjoy custom maps made by themselves or other community members.
Multiplayer mode gives the player the option to fight against other players in a skirmish style scenario of up to four players per map. Game modes include Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Capture the Flag and Coronation.
Unfortunately, the game doesn't feature a custom skirmish or kingmaker mode, where the player can battle against AI opponents.
