Crossbowmen are slower to move and reload and have a much shorter range than archers. They are however very accurate, and their deadly bolts can easily penetrate metal armour, making them excellent medium range missile troops. As such, crossbowmen thrive when placed atop towers or other elevated positions which increase their range. When dealing with crossbowmen, it is best to either overrun them with units such as macemen or bring sufficient ranged units of your own protected by mantlets.
