Macemen are thuggish brutes that're very quick and deal out a lot of damage, making them ideal assault troops.  They are not heavily armoured however, and are very susceptible to missile fire. Still, their relatively cheap price, high attack and speed make them an excellent unit. Macemen can also be very useful for defending your castle, as they can be amassed in large numbers quite easily and sent out to destroy enemy ranged units or siege weapons such as trebuchets.
