The very first mission pits you against three Nomads with advantage, perhaps the best rusher lord out there.

You are given a Rat as a fodder, who is very unlikely to help you out by himself other than providing a staging ground for your troops, perhaps the only pro to save him.

How did you survive the initial pressure? I was kinda lucky with a double Nomad attack bothering with destroying the Rat's infinite woodcutters, rather than attacking the naked lord. Without that, I'm clueless as to how to get enough troops to counter the skirmisher spam.

First thing I did was to buy as many crossbows and leather armours as possible then sending my new crossbowmen to the rat's keep. The rat is basically useless but his keep makes for a great defensive structure. This should help keep the rat alive and the nomads distracted. I also fortified the river with a gatehouse and crossbowmen. Really crossbowmen were the key to beating the nomads here. 

This is what my castle looked like once things were pretty stable. Not very impressive  or pretty but it did the trick.

At a few attempts I found that crossbowmen don't arrive fast enough to the scene, but I'm happy to stand corrected. I didn't even build a castle in that game, since all Nomads were laser-focused on the Rat. 😄 In the whole mission I got like one stray light camel getting through the top ford, bottom was not in danger at all.
